1) Leone d’ Almerita – a white wine from the Italian island of Sicily. A blend of the fragrant Catarratto grape, with a small amount of Chardonnay for smoothness. Catarratto also known as Bianco d’ Alcamo is the prominent grape variety of Marsala wine. It has a fresh aromatic taste, medium body, off dry with an impression of sweetness, citrus fruit, and long finish.
2) Zaca Mesa – Z Cuvee, Estate Bottled This California, Santa Ynez estate focuses on grape varieties indigenous to the Rhone Valley of France. This medium bodied blend consists of 48% Mourvedre, 32% Grenache, and 20% Syrah. Loaded with dark berry flavors, with a bit of ground pepper for a snappy finish.
3) Willi Opitz – Red Kiss Most of us are familiar with California Pinot Noir and French Burgundy, but the Austrians produce an elegant Pinot with soft tannins. Red Kiss has a bouquet of raspberries, and a taste of cherry and berry elements including strawberry and plum. It has a delicate structure which will go well with Italian as well as lighter meat dishes such as fowl.
4) Alaia – Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon This wine from Spain, a blend of 50% Prieto Picudo, 45% Tempranillo, and 5% Merlot. A mingling of berry, oak and herb flavors in this firm and delicious wine, with soft tannings and good acidity. Wine Spectator gives it an 87 point score.
5) Mommy’s Time Out – Italian white A terrific blend of Pinot Grigio and Garganega grapes. The Garganega is best known as the grape of Soave wines. This dry wine has a fruit forward attack and long finish, with hints of lemon and almond. Great by itself or with chicken or fish.
